Enough Said
I started this blog because it was a place for me to get my thoughts down about what I was going through, talk about my love for Lana and the love for this fandom. I hoped it would resonate with someone during my journey, and they found comfort or clarity in my words.
Well, that has all changed over the weekend. I mean, most of the time, the fandom can be a great group of folks sharing their love for Lana, but then some take it to the extreme and think this woman is superhuman. Forget she has a life that does not include the fandom, her best friend is facing the most challenging time of her life; she started a clothing line in the midst of a pandemic and is starring in a new TV role. The expectations are just not realistic.
Unless you have been apart of fandom or in a similar type of group, it's hard to explain what I mean. Like a family, like I said in my earlier blog, we bicker like children. You have some kids that need more attention, some kids who share their attention discreetly, and then you have the misbehaved kids. The ones who think you are not showing them enough attention, so start with rude and unnecessary comments. Well, Lana has a million kids (literally), and with these kids comes some serious TLC on her part, but somehow it is never enough for this fandom.
I will admit my first experience meeting Lana at a Con was not desirable, but not because of her but the way she was being herded through the crowd like a lamb to slaughter. By the end of the day, she was just done with it. Again, she is human just like the rest of us, but fans don't see this. They think they pay for her attention, so they need to get what they pay for. Rude fans were yelling; it just broke my heart.
Now, 6 years later, and several cons, I have learned that the experience is more than just Lana. It is the relationships that I have built with these women, men, kids, and families. One of my best and dearest friends I met through this fandom. Without Lana, I would have never met Shelley, and for that, I will be eternally grateful.
Now because of the disrespect, Lana has removed herself from social media. She has had it, and she is done, which, to be honest, I don't blame her. This fandom takes things too far, idolizing her with unrealistic expectations, expecting her to cancel friendships because the fandom does not agree, and the list goes on. Unfortunately, a few can ruin the outcome of the collective group.
Lana posted last year this saying, "Let your apology be as loud as your disrespect." I hope whoever is reading this entry understands what they have done.
